About This Course

Once a pneumatic device emission reduction project is defined, its offsets depend on getting the numbers right. This course explains which sources and sinks are included in or excluded from quantification and why, then works through the emission reduction equations for high to low vent and electrification projects, instrument gas to instrument air conversions and vent gas capture and destruction. It covers vented gas volumes from operating hours and vent rates, pump stroke based estimates, methane and carbon dioxide composition and density, global warming potential (GWP), electricity emissions from grid, on-site fossil fuel and renewable supply, and destruction efficiency for captured gas.

The course then turns to the data quality expected for verification to a reasonable level of assurance: project, baseline and project condition documentation, record retention, and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) practices, with attestations ruled out as evidence. The technical material explains the gas equivalency ratio used to convert metered instrument air into the methane that would have been vented, based on flow coefficient and choked flow, and the leak discount rate applied where devices are not regularly inspected. It closes with device inventory requirements, field vent rate sampling methods and meter types, rules for developing emission factors, the use of manufacturer specified vent rates and baseline selection for greenfield sites.

What Will Be Covered:

  • Inclusion and exclusion of sources and sinks and the reasoning behind each decision

  • Emission reduction equations for each project type, including aggregated projects

  • Key parameters: operating hours, vent rates, pump strokes, gas composition, density and global warming potential

  • Electricity and fuel extraction emissions and destruction efficiency for vent gas capture

  • Project documentation, record keeping and quality assurance and quality control requirements

  • The gas equivalency ratio between instrument air and methane, flow coefficient and choked flow

  • Leak discount rates tied to years since last inspection

  • Device inventory data needed to track conversions, decommissioning and pressures

  • Field vent rate sampling, meter types, emission factor development and manufacturer specified vent rates

  • Baseline development for greenfield electric pump and controller installations
