What You'll Learn

check_circleDescribe how pneumatic devices at oil and gas sites use and vent natural gas
check_circleDistinguish the four pneumatic emission reduction project types eligible under the provincial offset system
check_circleIdentify the functional equivalence metric and greenfield or brownfield eligibility for each project type
check_circleExplain the evidence a project developer needs to demonstrate applicability, including inspection records and a device inventory
check_circleSelect the appropriate baseline approach for a given project type based on the data available

About This Course

Natural gas is the most common power source for pneumatic controllers and chemical injection pumps at oil and gas wells and facilities, and every cubic metre these devices vent is released as methane. This course explains how projects that cut that venting are defined for greenhouse gas offset purposes in Alberta. It covers the four eligible project types: high to low vent controller conversions, instrument gas to instrument air system conversions, pneumatic device electrification, and vent gas capture and destruction. For each, it sets out the metric for functional equivalence, whether greenfield installs or brownfield conversions qualify, and how multiple projects can be aggregated under one project plan.

The course then works through the applicability conditions a project developer must evidence, including equal process control performance, annual inspection and maintenance, a device inventory and the end of offset eligibility once an activity becomes legally required. It introduces the key vocabulary of static, dynamic and total vent rate and low venting and non-venting devices, and compares the historical benchmark, comparison based, performance standard and projection based baseline approaches and when each applies. Finally, it maps the upstream, on-site and downstream sources and sinks in the baseline and project conditions and explains how each is classified as controlled, related or affected.

What Will Be Covered:

  • Why natural gas powered controllers and chemical injection pumps are a major methane vent source

  • The four eligible project types and what each one changes on site

  • Functional equivalence metrics based on operating hours, pump strokes and captured gas mass

  • Greenfield installs versus brownfield conversions and which project types qualify for each

  • Applicability conditions, inspection and maintenance duties and the device inventory

  • Flexibility provisions for aggregation, statistical comparisons and site-specific emission factors

  • Definitions of static, dynamic and total vent rate and low venting and non-venting devices

  • Historical benchmark, comparison based, performance standard and projection based baselines

  • Baseline and project sources and sinks and their classification as controlled, related or affected
