About This Course

A surface water plant that cannot show enough log removal for Giardia, Cryptosporidium and viruses is out of compliance, however good its finished water looks. Designing and operating a municipal waterworks in Alberta means understanding how treatment credits are earned, what performance each filtration and disinfection process must achieve, and what monitoring, record keeping and reporting follow. This course sets out the standards that apply to municipal waterworks systems in the province.

You will cover potable water quality and treatment standards for surface water, groundwater under the direct influence of surface water (GWUDI) and groundwater, including filtration and disinfection requirements, filtration exemptions, source water monitoring and criteria for identifying GWUDI. Performance standards for rapid sand, slow sand, membrane and cartridge filtration and for chlorine, UV, chlorine dioxide and ozone disinfection are explained alongside filtration, disinfection and other treatment credits. The course then moves to facility design standards for filtration, disinfection and fluoridation, system operation and reliability, treatment chemicals, handling of plant wastes such as backwash and sludge, and transmission and distribution mains (frost protection, cross-connection control and disinfection of mains and reservoirs). It finishes with compliance and follow-up monitoring, record keeping and reporting, laboratory quality assurance, facility risk assessment and facility classification and operator certification. It suits municipal, water treatment and environmental engineers involved in design, approvals or operation.

What Will Be Covered:

  • Potable water quality and treatment standards for surface water, GWUDI and groundwater

  • Log reduction requirements, filtration exemption and criteria for determining GWUDI
